HTML5 vs GIF

HTML5 vs GIF: Which banner format fits when?

Both formats can add motion to digital advertising, but they differ significantly in animation control, interaction, technical flexibility and delivery.

When HTML5 is the stronger option

HTML5 banners use web technologies such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. This allows multiple scenes, smoother transitions and interactive elements to be controlled individually instead of playing the entire ad as a sequence of finished frames.

This is especially useful when a campaign includes several fixed sizes, needs a precise motion concept or must meet technical requirements such as clickTag handling, defined loop behaviour or backup assets.

When GIF can make sense

GIF is simpler and can be sufficient for short, straightforward animation. It works best where the target environment explicitly supports GIF and no advanced interaction is required.

Its limitations include a restricted colour palette, less flexible animation and potentially high file sizes for longer or highly detailed sequences.

The delivery environment should decide

The right choice is not abstract. Publisher rules, platform requirements, file-size limits, animation policies, interaction needs and the number of formats all matter. Technical specifications should therefore be available before production begins.

A practical decision guide

  • HTML5: when animation needs to be precise, modular and technically controllable.
  • GIF: when a very simple animation is enough and the target environment explicitly accepts it.
  • Static: when motion does not add meaningful communication value.

What the brief should contain

Alongside format sizes and target platform, document maximum file size, animation duration, loop rules, click logic and required fallbacks. This lets the creative be designed correctly from the start.
